Digital Transformation and Emerging Technologies in Metrological and Validation Processes

INTI

"Abstract: This presentation describes the impact that digital transformation has caused on the software validation process of devices and metrological systems at Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Industrial (INTI). In order to describe these impacts, the following aspects have been considered. The increase in the digital component in metrological devices and systems implies an increase in their vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities must be mitigated to preserve their metrological properties. Therefore, the evaluation procedures must be adapted in order to verify that the devices and systems are suitable to guarantee the reliability of the information they manage. At the same time, this digital transformation implies the incorporation of new technologies in the devices that must be validated and in the measurement systems in general. In this regard, the experience carried out in conjunction with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on the adoption of emerging technologies for LPWAN communication in a network of mobile sensors is presented.

Very interesting! There is no doubt that the digital transformation requires validation processes where the metrology plays a very important role, but in your experience how can we identify the opportunities areas. Is it possible to determine the accuracy or uncertainty of the different comunications systems? According to the example of mobile sensors in the buses, It could be useful nowdays (covidays) for the companies that wants to ensure and monitor the security of personal trasnportation. (when companies have their own buses). Congratulations, your experiences are very appreciated.

Very good presentation. Sebastián, wichh are the advantages of using LoRa in an electricity meter instead of PLC (power line) communication?

Great job congratulations, my question: Imagining the metrological needs of the productive sector, the need to no stop production to calibrate, the need for high accuracy, the need for real-time calibration, the need to calibrate process, perhaps, the existence of a calibration center with highly accurate sensors in the cloud, where high-quality instrumentation with digital components will serve as a standard, they will compare each other, self-calibrate, and this sense yields fast and reliable real-time calibration certificates with uncertainty estimation. In this new scenario; ¿What would be the future of the NMIs, the CMCs, the intercomparisons between laboratories in this new context?

The more efficient dissemination of evaluation protocols, practices and methods in the form of documented standards, regulations, instrumentation and training can make the metrological framework for Industry 4.0 more robust and trustworthy.

Great presentation! With the develpment of the new technologies, sensor systems, Do you think that is time for the metrology to start thinking for a validation of systems as a whole instead of as a separete sensors as is widely use nowadays? For example, many countries have a national regulation of taximeters, with test that are needed to be done for each taximeter, but with the rise of apps like uber, each smartphone becomes a taximenter, so this kind of regulation are starting to be outdated.

Gustavo and Sebastian, Interesting presentation, I have a question: What operation cost could have a network of mobile sensors?
